School Philosophy
Burcham
Elementary School is committed to creating a community where
teaching fosters a safe, challenging, and joyful environment where
strategies are used to bring social and academic learning together so
that children thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
In
cooperation with parents and community, the staff establishes high
expectations for all students as the standard and provides a safe,
nurturing environment where our students have the opportunity to become
productive, knowledgeable, and responsible citizens.
Belief
Statement
- All students
can learn and reach their highest potential.
- Parents,
students, and staff share in the responsibility of students reaching
their full potential - academically and socially.
- Daily
attendance is vital to academic success and is the responsibility of
the parents.
- Teachers,
staff, administration, parents, and
community members share the responsibility for providing a physically
and emotionally safe environment.
- Children need
a nurturing and structured environment to achieve optimal learning.
- All students
are recognized for their diversity and individuality.
- Teachers must
continue to learn and grow personally and professionally to adapt and
respond to the needs of the children.
- A variety of
teaching strategies, meaningful
materials, and emerging technology should be used to maximize the
students’ individual learning styles.
- The social
curriculum is as important as the academic curriculum.
- How children
learn is as important as what they learn: process and content go hand
in hand.
- Knowing the
children we teach - individually, culturally, and developmentally - is
as important as knowing the content we teach.
- Knowing the
families of the children we teach and working with them as partners is
essential to children’s education.
- How the
adults at school work together is as important as individual competence.
- Based upon
research, physical activity increases learning and academic achievement.
